"ILO Governing Body lamented that "the government refused an offer of technical assistance made by ILO to advance towards a solution for the multiple, existing problems."

Amnesty International urges authorities to stop escalation in violence

Venezuelan authorities were requested Thursday in a press release from Amnesty International to take prompt action in order to prevent a potential escalation of violence over the next few weeks, in advance of a referendum on the proposed changes to the Constitution.

The organization has "watched with concern violent confrontations in the context of the protests that have been held since October 2007, in favor and against the constitutional reform."

"During such protests, there have been violent clashes both between the officials of security agencies responsible for keeping law and order and demonstrators, and between the students who take part in the protests and armed civilians, resulting in at least nine injured and two dead people."

Amnesty International urged the authorities to ensure prompt investigation in an independent, impartial manner, and make the individuals responsible to face trial.

ILO censors Venezuela for violating employers' rights

The International Labor Organization (ILO) censored on Wednesday the Venezuelan government performance for violating the rights of employers and their associations, Efe reported.

ILO Governing Body implemented the recommendations made by the Committee on Trade Union Freedom, following a complaint filed by the Ibero-American Business Organizations (OIE) against Venezuela.

Since 2003, OIE has filed multiple charges with ILO to denounce "harassment of businessmen present in Venezuela and their associations, as well as some media outlets," OIE Secretary-General Antonio Peñalosa told Efe.

ILO Governing Body lamented that "the government refused an offer of technical assistance made by ILO to advance towards a solution for the multiple, existing problems."

ourteen dissident students under arrest in Táchira state

Fourteen students at the Santiago Mariño College in San Cristóbal, southwestern Táchira state, face prison terms ranging from four to eight years, following their detention while staging a demonstration to reject the changes to the Constitution proposed by President Hugo Chávez.

The youth were taken Wednesday to court, where justice Jorge Ochoa set a hearing for November 16, when he is to rule on the allegations filed by public prosecutors.

Their defense attorney, Daniel Pérez, said "they were charged with obstruction of public roads."
